Young Persons Unit
HMP & YOI Parc has a Young Persons Unit that houses 64 young males aged from 15 – 17 years of age. The unit was opened in response to the Youth Justice Board’s (YJB) desire to house Welsh young offenders closer to their own homes. We adopt a holistic approach to the effective rehabilitation and resettlement of young people.
The John Charles Unit Mission Statement
The young people held within the John Charles Young Person’s Unit at HMP & YOI Parc shall be treated in a manner which promotes their sense of dignity and self worth, facilitates their integration into society and reflects the best interests and needs of the individual.
The maintenance of family and community links will be promoted and encouraged at all times.
All young people will be offered the opportunity to attend the Learning & Skills Centre and to take part in additional purposeful activities in order to enhance their personal development and preparation for returning to the community. All young people will receive care, protection and all necessary individual assistance - social, psychological, medical, educational and physical – in order to promote their personal and social development.
The work of the John Charles Unit supports the Youth Justice Board’s core objectives to prevent re-offending and promote resettlement opportunities for young people. The Welsh Assembly Government extended entitlement agenda will be reflected in all policy and procedures to support the rights of the child.
